About Us

There once were four Greek Gods, each charge to his own wind; Boreas was the rude god of the chilling northern winter winds, whereas Notus was the god of the hot, steamy winds of the summer. Eurus was the god of the Eastern wind, coming in the fall and casting the leaves from trees. It was Zephyrus, however, the lover of Flora and god of the warming winds that came every spring, who made all the plants grow.'

Zephyrus Orchids first started as a laboratory business, doing contract propagation for orchid growers across Canada and the United States. Because orchid seed is required to be sown under sterile laboratory conditions, in the absence of harmful bacteria and fungi, these first critical stages of plant development are performed in a lab environment.

Zephyrus Orchids is located in Oldcastle, Ontario, 5 minutes from Windsor and 15 minutes from the Detroit/Windsor bridge crossing. Built by Mike Colasanti in 2000, and attached to his garden centre called The Bloomin' Gardener, we are now celebrating our fifth year in business.

Zephyrus Orchids was founded by orchid aficionado John Doherty. John attended the University of Guelph, earning a degree in Plant Biotechnology. An American Orchid Society judge as well as a writer and speaker, John travels here there and everywhere to shows and lectures, always looking for the latest, greatest orchids to bring back home.

Truly a family operation, John's father Dr. John Doherty, is an accomplished grower and is a vital part of the Zephyrus formula. You will likely see John's better half Nicole at orchid shows or taking your phone or email orders. Jordyn, our 'Repotting Manager' has a new member to train, her little sister Madelyn Camille!
